Pontifex — Cristi Archery Club has won the Sanctarian National Team Archery Championship for the first time in 40 years, defeating defending champions Foris Bowmen in a dramatic final on Sunday. The Terra Monticolarum club secured a 5–4 victory following a shoot-off, with captain Elena Varela delivering the decisive arrow after the teams finished level across four sets.
Varela’s final shot landed just centimetres from the centre of the target, securing the title and ending a championship drought stretching back to 1986. “I’ve been shooting here since I was eleven, and I’ve spent most of my life hearing stories about the last time we won,” Varela said, with tears in her eyes. “To be standing here with the trophy now, with this team, is something I don’t think any of us quite believe yet.”
Founded in 1874, Cristi Archery Club is among the oldest surviving sporting organisations in Terra Monticolarum. Although a regular competitor in the national championships, the club has spent much of the past two decades outside the competition’s leading ranks. Their opponents, Foris Bowmen, were seeking a fourth consecutive title and had entered the final as favourites after an unbeaten run through the earlier rounds. Their captain, Marcus Vale, congratulated Cristi on the victory, describing the final as “one of the closest we’ve contested in years”.
The result was greeted with celebrations among the travelling Cristi supporters, many of whom had made the journey to Pontifex for the final. This year’s final was held at the Pontifex Archery Grounds in Novum Limium, with the city selected as part of the championship’s rotating host arrangements. It was the first time Pontifex had hosted the national final since 2018.
Club president Adrian Solano confirmed that a public celebration would be held in Cristi later this week, with the championship trophy to be displayed at the club’s headquarters. “Forty years is a long time to wait,” Solano said. “There are people who helped keep this club going through some very difficult years who deserve to enjoy this as much as the athletes.”
