Sanctus — The Sanctarian Football Association (SFA) has announced plans to expand the country’s top women’s football league from twelve to sixteen clubs, following several seasons of growing attendances, increased commercial investment, and renewed interest in the women’s game. The expansion, which will take effect from the 2026 season, will see four additional clubs admitted to the top division, with the SFA inviting applications from existing teams competing in regional and lower-tier competitions. Clubs seeking admission will be required to meet new standards concerning facilities, financial sustainability, and youth development.
The announcement follows a review of the domestic women’s football structure, with the SFA concluding that the existing twelve-team competition was limiting opportunities for clubs outside the country’s largest cities. The expanded league is expected to provide greater representation for states which have traditionally had fewer clubs competing at the highest level. The Association has also confirmed an increase in central funding for participating clubs, including financial assistance for travel, coaching, and improvements to playing facilities. A new commercial agreement, currently being negotiated with broadcasters and sponsors, is expected to provide additional revenue ahead of the 2026 season.
While the proposals have been welcomed by clubs seeking promotion, there are concerns about whether the expansion could stretch the availability of experienced players and coaching staff. Some existing top-flight clubs have also questioned whether the additional fixtures and travel requirements will place further pressure on teams operating with comparatively limited budgets. In response, the association says the changes are intended to strengthen the domestic competition over the longer term, with a particular emphasis on creating more opportunities for young Sanctarian players to progress from regional football into the national league.
Applications for the four additional places will open later this summer, with the successful clubs expected to be announced before the end of the year.
