Democratic Left Secures Senate Majority as Greens Suffer Heavy Losses

by Ahmed Patel

Sanctus — The Democratic Left Party has secured an outright majority in the Senate following Saturday’s general election, winning 21 of the chamber’s 40 seats and ending its reliance on support from the Green Party to pass legislation through the upper house. The election occurred earlier than the original 2027 timeline as outgoing Chancellor Dr. Bethany Greer opted to trigger a constitutional provision enabling an election early if the House is dissolved within 30 months of the scheduled Senate dissolution.

The DLP gained seven seats, up from 14 at the previous election in 2020, while the Sanctarian Conservative Party held steady on ten. The Green Party suffered the heaviest losses, falling from seven senators to four, while New Sanctaria saw its representation halved from four to two. The Christian Union Party also lost one of its two seats, leaving Father Michael O’Dwyer from Terra Monticolarum as its sole representative in the Senate.

Senate Leader Nicholas Pratchett retained his seat in Sanctus, while Conservative opposition leader Alison Woodward was re-elected in Terra Monticolarum. Long-time Senate Moderator Seth Leveson opted to retire at this year’s election, leaving leadership of the body as a whole open to contest with the Senate returns. It’s believed the Democratic Left Party will facilitate the election of a Moderator from another party in order to maintain its slim majority in the federal parliament’s upper house.
